Top 5 Blogging Tips

One of the questions I’m often asked is “How Did You Become A Blogger?”. I’m often flattered when I receive messages from prospective bloggers as it means that I’ve had impact in the space. While from the outside it can look exciting and Insta-fabulous, it’s still a job and requires a lot of tenacity, organization and well…work! So here are some my top tips on kick starting your blogging career.

  1. Define your brand and following.
Know your brand and your customer. Who are your followers, what are their demographics, what messaging do you want to communicate to them. Building your brand takes time and part of that growth is learning about your followers. Engage them in conversation, ask questions, and be cognizant you of your value proposition. Engaging your followers often brings you on step closer to defining your brand and message.
  2. Don’t be afraid to say “No”.
One of the most difficult and effective words in managing your own brand is knowing when to use the word “No”. Though always flattered, there are some requests that may not be aligned with your brands vision or values. Learn to steer clear of them. Don’t be afraid to decline an offer or return a product that diminishes your brand equity.
  1. Be consistent.
Consistency is always key in managing a blog. When trying to build your online footprint, it’s essential to publish consistent content. Once you have followership, it’s important to curate your posts to make your audience feel they are continuously learning about a new product or experience.
  1. Always be kind.
Never burn a bridge. Humility, gratitude, and kindness is something of an anomaly in the fashion word. Your behavior is a direct reflection of your brand and so if a brand or PR rep has a bad experience with you, they will make it known to others. You should do your best to rise above it and handle yourself with grace and kindness. Trust me, people in business appreciate it.
  1. Treat your blog like a business.
What’s given for free is never valued so don’t undervalue yourself. As much as I love a Chloe bag, my mortgage company doesn’t accept it as a form of payment. You can’t pay bills with free clothes. Be mindful of when it’s appropriate to work in exchange for pro bono products. Sometimes, it may be in your interest to cooperate with a brands (zero) budget if it can grow your brand’s social media footprint.

A. Now that I blog full-time, I treat my instagram like a business too. I am strategic and post at high engagement times. I use specific hashtags. These are all small steps you can take to turn your social following into a business.

B. Track your earnings. I always keep track of and complete a quarterly earnings report for Style MBA. It’s important to set financial goals for your business and track them on a monthly basis.
